Errors that Demonstrate PST Corruption and Resolutions to Fix them

For storing data (such as email messages, contacts, attachments, appointments, notes, journals, calendar entries, etc.), MS Outlook uses PST file, abbreviation of Personal Storage Table. The file is stored locally on the computer and is importable into MS Outlook whenever required. This is why PST is also used as backup file. Moreover, if you are shifting to another branch of your organization, you can simply take PST with you to import it into Outlook where you are migrating.

Despite offering an array of advantages, PST file lags in some aspects, such as corruption, which is a major drawback of the file. Corruption may occur due to various reasons, including virus attacks, oversizing, header corruption, improper system shutdown, abnormal exit from Outlook, etc. Oversizing is the most common cause of PST corruption; let us look at the scenario more closely:

Microsoft has launched several versions of MS Outlook; different sets of versions house PST with different size limits, such as:

  • MS Outlook 2002 and older versions allow 2 GB size of PST
  • MS Outlook 2003 and 2007 versions allow PST of 20 GB size
  • MS Outlook 2010 and 2013 versions allow PST of 50 GB

Everything is fine till now; the problem occurs when data placed in PST reaches or goes beyond the prescribed size limit. If such situation occurs, PST file gets corrupt; that means you have encountered huge data loss. When corruption occurs, you face various errors with different messages. A list of most common errors is displayed below:

  • File Outlook.pst could not be accessed. Data error. Cyclic redundancy check.
  • Outlook.pst can not be accessed – 0×80040116.

·         Unable to display the folder. The file Outlook.pst could not be accessed.

·         Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

·         Errors have been detected in the file Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information about the Inbox repair tool, see Help.

·         The file Outlook.pst could not be found.

·         The file Outlook.pst is not a personal folders file.

Note that Outlook.pst file may be stored with any other name on your computer.

When a corruption error occurs, it becomes the most primary task to fix it so that you do not lose access to data. To repair a corrupt PST file, you are provided with an inbuilt utility named Inbox Repair Tool, which is found on your local computer saved as scanpst.exe. The tool is helpful in minor corruption cases; however, if you face severe PST damage, it fails to repair the file. Moreover, the worst event is corruption of the utility itself. In such cases, you become empty handed.

Not to worry! There are a number of Outlook PST repair software applications available in the market. After installation, the software repairs corrupt PST file and gets all your data back. A good software for PST Repair is Stellar Phoenix Outlook PST Repair. Using this tool all kind of PST corruption issues can be resolved very easily.
